Description
SPANA – The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad – is the global charity for the working animals of the world. Since our foundation in 1923, we have worked across Africa, Asia and Latin America to support the welfare of working animals, including horses, donkeys, mules, oxen and camels. In 2023, we launched ‘Transforming the lives of working animals: SPANA Strategy 2023–27’. Through our strategy, SPANA will make a sustainable and lasting change to working animal welfare across the globe.
Following a century of supporting working animal welfare, SPANA is now at a key juncture in its history. The need for our work has never been greater, and this demand will only increase in the years ahead. The impact of the climate crisis, the increase in poverty levels and instability in many regions will be particularly hard on working animals and the communities who rely on them. Extreme weather patterns, natural hazards and food and water shortages are threatening the lives of people living in poverty – and, the more vulnerable people are, the harder it is for them to recover from failed harvests, destroyed homes, and health crises – and therefore to provide for their working animal. The World Bank has estimated that, by 2030, the climate crisis could push more than 120 million more people into poverty. Working animals are intrinsically linked to the global shift we’re seeing. We anticipate that the demands on working animals will grow exponentially.
Our strategy outlines how we will develop our work to meet these increasingly difficult global challenges. We will improve the quality of life for working animals at a greater scale than ever before. We will ensure the contribution to working animals across the world is recognised and valued. And we will ensure the world of working animals thrives as part of the nexus of animals, people and the environment.
Working closely with the Chief Executive and senior leadership team you will ensure SPANA effectively delivers its inspiring mission and is governed to the highest of standards. Your responsibilities will include shaping and reviewing our strategic objectives, guaranteeing alignment with our charitable goals and utilising your specialist skills to support SPANA to transform the welfare of working animals globally.
This is an exciting time to join SPANA, with a century of experience, and solid foundations, we are looking for a range of specialist Trustees to join our highly skilled, knowledgeable and dedicated team of trustees; bringing invaluable experience and expertise to drive our mission forward.
SPANA is committed to embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion and would ideally like to build greater diversity within the Board, the Board actively welcomes different perspectives. Alongside, relevant professional experience, we are proactively seeking lived experience in the countries in which we operate.
